Victims of the Boxing Day tsunami, Fatima’s family lost their fishing boat income and struggled to survive and to provide for Fatima’s therapy needs. A development agency provided the family with income-generation support to make and sell baskets in the local market. The extra income means Fatima gets the help she needs to do her two favourite things – going to school and playing with her sister.
“If development is about bringing excluded people into society, then disabled people belong in schools, in legislature, at work, on buses… and everywhere else that those who are not disabled take for granted…” (J.D. Wolfensohn, World Bank; 2002).
