A reason to smile

Many would say Afridi has little to smile about. With cerebral palsy and a hearing impairment, he potentially faced a life of poverty even before his family lost everything to the tsunami. Unable to afford treatment, Afridi couldn’t walk or speak and hasn’t been to school. Yet a development agency sought out people with a disability, and now Afridi’s getting the rehabilitation he needs. He has a reason to smile!

Over 600 million – or 10% of the world’s population – have a disability. When the lives and livelihoods of their families are taken into account, 25% of the population is affected (Asian Development Bank; 2002).
