Sustainable development – big words that mean, in part, ensuring local people are skilled in working with people with a disability in their own communities. Like this baby with spina bifida, being cared for by a local nurse trained with a non-government development project. Drawing from and building on local expertise makes disability inclusive practice sustainable.
Responsibilities of care-giving falls disproportionately on mothers or female siblings, resulting in even fewer opportunities for female family members to gain employment or complete schooling (S Miles; 1999).
