Second-hand adult-sized wheelchairs provide a set of wheels and somewhere to sit. Paediatric-sized wheelchairs are harder to find but are essential to increase participation and function for children.

Of the estimated 600 million plus people with disabilities worldwide, 70% live in developing countries and, according to UN statistics, 82% live below the poverty line (DCDD; 2006).
