When Keth lost his leg he had to leave the army and his source of income. Since he has been fitted with an artificial limb, he says he feels less dependent on others. Through a small-business loan from an AusAID-funded program, he’s set up his own business as a barber and is earning enough income to look after himself and his family.
Lack of opportunities in the job market of developing economies means many people with a disability turn to self employment to contribute to their families income, yet they often lack access to the funding mechanisms and microfinance that helps make it possible (Handicap International; 2006).
