Landmines in Eritrea

It is often harder for girls when they are injured than boys, especially in a poor country like Eritrea. This woman is one of the lucky ones – her family helped her get this artificial leg after she was injured by a landmine. Many women and girls with disabilities are denied access to medical support, rehabilitation and even schooling. This is due to poverty and the common belief that a disabled woman will not marry or get a job.

Women with disabilities are often doubly disadvantaged because of their status as women and as people with disabilities, and thus represent one of the most marginalised groups in society (DCDD; 2006).
