This boy has clubfoot, an impairment that turns a child’s feet inwards, making it difficult or impossible to walk. While easily treated in Australia, many people in the developing world cannot access the required rehabilitation services. The stairs in this picture also remind us that inaccessible environments can further disabled those with impairments from participating in everyday community life.
Depending on the type of building, the cost of providing accessibility for people with disabilities can be as low as 0.5-1% of the total cost of a project (Metts; 2000).
