Draft Pacific Disability Rights Framework 2016-2025

A regional framework for effective coordination and collaboration to support national government action on disability inclusive development

Achievement of disability rights is essential to Pacific development

Removing barriers to equal participation and unlocking the vast potential of Pacific people with disabilities are important on many grounds.  In addition to protecting and realising the basic human rights of persons with disabilities, it will contribute to poverty reduction and result in economic benefits that comes with improvements in wellbeing of persons with disabilities, their families and caregivers, such as reduced dependency on medical and welfare services and increased participation including in community life, livelihoods and the labour market. As Pacific societies undergo social and economic changes and evolve over time, States must play an increasing role in protecting their most vulnerable populations, in keeping with CRPD Article 28.
