Advocacy

We advocate for the inclusion of all people with disabilities across the Australian development programs and humanitarian responses in developing countries.

ADDC’s Call to Action

We are calling on Australian politicians to ensure that Australia continues its global leadership in championing disability-inclusive development as a core component of its aid program and international engagement.

Sustainable Development Goals & disability

Place all people with disabilities at the centre of Australia’s approach to the implementation and reporting on the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals to meet the commitment to “leave no one behind”, including for Australia’s Voluntary National Review on the 2030 Agenda to the UN’s High Level Political Forum in 2018.

Research and disability-inclusion

Ensure equal access to the benefits of Australian aid and, following the principle of “leave no one behind”, strengthen the evidence base on how to improve inclusion of all people with disabilities in development programming.

Women with disabilities and leadership

Take a dual approach to supporting the leadership of women with disability:

  • Ensure that women with disabilities are engaged in mainstream women’s leadership initiatives carried out under the Australian aid program.
  • Develop a multi-year action plan leading up to the 2018 CRPD Committee half-election and subsequent elections to support qualified women candidates with disabilities.

Budget and strategy

Within the aid budget and for each remaining year of the Development for All 2015-2020 strategy increase the annual investment in the lives of people with disabilities. In addition:

  • Set a measurable target for disability inclusion within the aid program, drawing on the success of the 80 per cent gender equality target.
  • Contribute to the development of a DAC code to enable improved tracking of disability-inclusive investment.

In support of the Australian DPOs;

We advocate for Australian Government to fully implement all articles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) including Article 32 which includes measures such as:

  1. Ensuring international cooperation, including international development programmes, is inclusive of and accessible to persons with disabilities;
  2. Facilitating and supporting capacity-building, including through the exchange and sharing of information, experiences, training programmes and best practices;
  3. Facilitating cooperation in research and access to scientific and technical knowledge;
  4. Providing, as appropriate, technical and economic assistance, including by facilitating access to and sharing of accessible and assistive technologies, and through the transfer of technologies.

We collate evidence of the successes and challenges in DID approaches to strengthen the work of the sector in this field.
