IDPD webinar – Shifting power: Championing rights at the intersection of gender equality and disability equity

In the lead up to International Day of People with Disabilities, we invite you to join a conversation on engaging and partnering with women and people of diverse sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics (SOGIESC) with disabilities in development and human rights initiatives.

OUR Speakers

The speakers sharing their research and current work at the intersection of gender and disability are: 

  • Dr Janie Mejias, Research Lead from Women Enabled International
  • Ms Eve Naqio, Project Lead at the Disability Pride Hub, Fiji
  • Ms Maria Un, Chair of HWDI South Sulawesi, Indonesian Association of Women with Disabilities (HWDI)
  • Ms Kathryn James, Independent consultant on disability inclusion, author of CBM Australia report on gender equality and disability equity

During the session our speakers will explore the discrimination and marginalisation women and people of diverse SOGIESC with disabilities face and share recent research and practical steps to create partnership and inclusion with women and people of diverse SOGIESC with disabilities.

OUR SPEAKERS

Dr. Janie Mejias is the US Organiser and a research lead at Women Enabled International (WEI) responsible for coordinating WEI’s U.S. focused projects and is the co-author of its global resource guide, Strengthening Gender Inclusion in Disability Spaces.  As a lifelong wheelchair user Janie is very active in the disability rights community. Prior to joining WEI’s team, Janie completed her PhD in Disability Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). While completing her doctoral program Janie worked as a Teaching Assistant and Instructor for UIC’s large undergraduate program in Disability Studies. During her graduate studies Janie was the recipient of the Ethel Louise Armstrong Fellowship and Alice J. Dan Dissertation Award.  

Ms Maria Un, Chair of HWDI South Sulawesi, Indonesian Association of Women with Disabilities (HWDI)

Ms Maria Un is a disability rights activist with over fourteen years of experience working with organizations of persons with disabilities and promoting the rights of Indigenous women with disabilities. Her work focuses on promoting the rights of women and girls with disabilities, inclusive education, women empowerment, increased participation of women and girls with disabilities, including Indigenous women and girls with disabilities in the decision-making process, and budgetary advocacy. She is the Chair of the Indonesia Association of Women with Disabilities (HWDI) of South Sulawesi Branches. She has been actively engaging in different movements such as the women’s movement and climate justice. 

Ms Eve Naqio, Project Lead at the Disability Pride Hub, Fiji 

Ms Eve Naqio is the project lead at the Disability Pride Hub (DPH) and an advocate for Pacific Islanders of diverse sexual orientation, gender identity and expression and sexual characteristics (SOGIESC) with Disabilities. We are based in Fiji and over the years, now include members from around the region. We operate through the support of Disability Rights Fund and Rainbow Pride Foundation. Our mission is to increase visibility and networking among people of diverse SOGIESC with Disabilities by fostering inclusion and dignity in diversity of members in their intersectionalities.

Kathryn James (she/her) is an independent development consultant focused on disability inclusion and gender empowerment. She has worked in the Australian development sector for two decades in disability inclusion, program management and advocacy roles, with a particular focus on Timor-Leste, PNG and South-East Asia. Kathryn has recently authored research with CBM Australia on the intersections of gender equality and disability equity.
